Hanukkah reminds the Jews that even the smallest light can push back tremendous darkness. The Maccabim faced a world where their identity, beliefs, and safety were constantly at risk, yet they still chose courage over fear. Today, modern Jews face their own challenges of rising anti-Semitism, the spread of misinformation, and violence. One may think that it is easy to stay quiet, or to assume their light is too small to matter. But Hanukkah teaches the opposite.

Every candle lit on Hanukkah is an act of defiance against despair. It is a statement that Jewish identity, hope, and resilience will not disappear. The Jewish community constantly chants the words “never forget”, but it is their responsibility to show the world how to remember that the Jews are not the bad ones. Each flame adds to the next until the whole hanukkiah glows, which represents that when individuals share their light, the entire community shines brighter.

Spreading light today means speaking up against hate and choosing pride instead of fear. Just like the oil that lasted longer than anyone expected, the light of the Jewish people can reach farther than ever imagined. And even in a time of darkness, Jews do not dim, they illuminate.
