Schools in 53 out of 67 of Florida’s counties–Miami-Dade included–made the quick decision of closing down the week of October 6 as the hurricane quickly swept through the state. However, what was expected to be a week full of stormy weather was strangely peaceful for Miami citizens.
While Miami was (mostly) spared from the wrath of Hurricane Milton, Tampa was not as fortunate. The hurricane set in with full fury and engulfed the city, instantly flooding streets and houses with water. The floods took no time in sweeping through Tampa’s neighborhoods, leaving residents stranded. The contrast between the impact of Hurricane Milton on the two cities could not be any more stark. While residents of the Miami area experienced little wind and rain, families in Tampa are now suffering from extensive damage to their homes and belongings.
The aftermath of Hurricane Milton serves as a reminder of Mother Nature’s unpredictability. Some in the path of the storm enjoyed a peaceful week off from school. Others are yet to enjoy such luxury, and have had their lives changed forever.
