The Return of Tiger Woods

- February 3, 2022 - Daniel Eidelstein

Many thought that Tiger Woods’s golf career would finally come to an end after seeing the horrific images of his car crash in Southern California on February 23rd, 2021. The legendary golfer suffered severe injuries to both his leg and ankle. When asked recently about amputation being on the table, Woods said it was definitely talked about for a while. After being in the hospital for several months, Woods was released and allowed to go back to his home in Jupiter, Florida. The public still does not know what the cause of the crash was, as Woods made sure the police kept that information private. However this has not stopped people from making their own speculations. Woods was said to be on bed rest for the next few months that he spent in his house with family and friends. Luckily, many of Tiger’s good friends from the tour all live just houses down from him. This made the recovery process much easier for him, as he was always surrounded by the people he loved being around the most. The day finally came where Woods was allowed to start moving around the house. He was even given the green light to start putting and chipping in his backyard practice area. There is no doubt that Tiger obviously wanted to get back to doing what he loved, immediately. It was just a couple of weeks ago that Woods finally posted a video of himself hitting a beautiful short iron at his practice range. The post was captioned: “Making progress.” What’s funny about this is that when Tiger was coming back from a potential career ending surgery years ago, he posted a similar video with the same caption as this one. This gave the golf world some hope that Tiger would finally be coming back. However, the big cat knew this comeback would be much tougher than those he had done earlier in his career. When asked about whether he would be back to playing on tour soon, Tiger gave a response that might have left some people pretty discouraged: “I’ll put it this way; as far as playing at the tour level… I don’t know when that’s going to happen… Now I’ll play a round here and there… Um,  a little hit and giggle… I can, I can do something like that.” Despite this answer, people were just excited to hear that Tiger could play again. Golf fanatics won’t have to wait much longer to see him play on TV, however. This weekend, Tiger will be competing in the PNC Championship alongside his son, Charlie, in a scramble format tournament. Tiger and his son played in this event last year, leaving social media impressed by how similar Charlie was to his dad in terms of golf game. Now that he’s back, the question is whether he’ll be the same Tiger that won The Masters in 2019, or the Tiger that has just come back from a catastrophic injury and can barely compete with the rest of the field. We’ll just have to wait a couple more days to find out!
