“I worked in the post office for over 20 years. I had a nice career, and was moving up in the ranks. I never thought I would leave Panama. I thought I would retire there to see my grandchildren grow up. But life is not always what you expect, so I ended up here, in the United States. I had to leave everything behind, everyone that I loved. I haven’t seen my son or my grandchildren for the past two years. I’ve had to fight to get used to it here, where I have no one and don’t speak the language, but I’ve gotten through it. I am a warrior. I am independent and everything that my family is today, is because of me, and no one can take that away from me. I love working at Hillel and I’ve met a lot of people with good hearts here. Now I want to get a taste of this American dream everyone always talks about.”
