“I was very depressed growing up. I was the type of person that would smile on the outside, but would really feel sad and alone on the inside. I even contemplated suicide several times, wondering if I mattered to anyone in this world. Then one day, I was introduced to the bible by my mentor. It seemed interesting, but I didn’t really look further into it. I had been to church before, but never really paid much attention while there. One day however, I found out I was going to have a son. At that moment, my life changed forever. I didn’t want my son to go through what I went through, wondering if anyone loves him, or if anyone even cares about him. I decided I had to do something different with my life to make sure that he had a different life than I had. I didn’t want him to have the emptiness that I had growing up, so I began going to church. This was a different type of church, though. It wasn’t like any other church I’d been to before. In this church, people weren’t just hollering or screaming ‘alleluia’, and then walking out the door unchanged. No, here people cared about me, and it was genuine. People would ask me how I felt, and treated me with kindness. I found there was love for me in the world. Now, I try to do the same for other people. I try to smile at everyone that walks by me. You don’t know what people are going through, and a smile can really boost someones day. You should see my son’s smile; he is six years old.”
